Summer Dreaming began the way the best summer days do — slowly, warmly, with nowhere particular to be.
I painted this piece in a state of pure joy, wanting to capture that golden, hazy feeling of a lazy afternoon when the world feels full and alive. The colours are rich and vibrant, deep meadow greens, sun-drenched golds, and bursts of wildflower colour because summer, at its best, is never quiet.
Look closely and you'll find a whole world going about its business. A tiny snail making its unhurried way through the undergrowth. Bees drifting from bloom to bloom. A ladybird pausing on a leaf. And then the bigger characters; a cheeky red squirrel mid-mischief, a rabbit keeping a watchful eye, a fox curled in a sun-warmed slumber, and a hedgehog tucked away in the shadows. There are more still, if you take the time to look.
This is a painting to get lost in. To hang somewhere you sit quietly, and find something new each time you glance up. It's a celebration of the small, wonderful, teeming life that surrounds us every summer; if only we slow down enough to notice.
